Veterinary clinic visits can often be more stressful than human clinic visits, mainly because the animal patients are unable to describe what’s wrong, and are unable to listen to reasoned calm. Instead, the animal relies upon its owner and the veterinary clinic worker to keep it calm through their handling and mannerisms. To make the veterinary clinic visits smoother, there are a number of steps you, as the owner, can take, so as to provide an easy clinic visit, beneficial to your animal, the clinic worker, and easier upon yourself.

1. Keep control of your animal

If your animal is running wild during the clinic visit, it will be an extremely inefficient clinic visit. The veterinary clinic worker cannot work to both keep your animal still and do the clinic examination. It is up to you to keep your animal still in order to expedite the process. Do your best to keep your animal from making excessive noise, running around, or attacking the clinic worker.

2. Be able to describe what’s wrong

Before you enter into your veterinary clinic, try to discover some of your animal’s symptoms. Rather than just saying that the animal is acting differently, look to discover exactly what has been causing the animal to act differently. The clinic worker may not have time to discover all of the different issues wrong with your animal. In order to expedite the clinic visit and allay your animal’s discomfort, try to discover the causes of the animal’s symptoms. For instance, if the animal is limping, before going into the veterinary clinic try to figure out the cause of the animal’s limping, whether it relates to a joint issue or a paw problem.

3. Have records ready

Keep records of vaccinations, treatments, and illnesses your animal has had, the same as you would do for a human. It is extremely helpful to the veterinary clinic worker if you can tell him or her that your animal has recently undergone a certain treatment or medicine that may have related or interfered with the current treatment.

4. Keep treats ready

Many veterinary clinics will offer some free treats, mostly for dogs and cats for the owner to give to the animal. Giving the animal a treat can help the animal to associate something positive with going to the veterinary clinic. If the clinic does not offer these treats, bring along one or two in order to help the animal build this association for future visits.
