Walk-in clinics can be great, especially for people who have unexpected issues that do not necessarily need emergency room attention, or for people who do not know their schedules enough to plan an appointment in another health clinic ahead of time. They can, however, be problematic in some senses, given the potential for unexpected clientele, though there are a few things you can do to make your personal health clinic visit a little easier.

1. Bring your history

Even if the walk-in clinic is a place you have attended before, and that has your records, bring your medical history along with you. Since the health clinic doctors don’t know that you’re coming, they have not had time beforehand to pull your files out. Also, since they are a walk-in clinic, they may not be expecting a return visit from you, and could have stored your medical history in an area apart from their normal records. Similarly, if this is a health clinic you’ve never visited before, they will have no way of acquiring any of your history or insurance information. This also begs another point; if you’re traveling, it is always good to bring copies of your pertinent medical information, just in case of an issue that requires you to visit a walk-in clinic or some other type of health clinic.

2. Know what you need

Before entering into the walk-in clinic, know exactly what you need. This knowledge may not be as obvious as you might think. If you have a problem and need an quick fix until you can get to your regular health clinic, decide that and specify beforehand that that’s what you’re looking for from the walk-in clinic. It’s good to listen to the health clinic worker’s options before becoming too adamant, but if your health clinic worker walks in to the appointment room and asks you what you need, it will greatly expedite the process if you already know what you want.

3. Be patient

Because you’re attending a walk-in clinic, it’s likely that you’ll have to wait an unspecified amount of time before seeing the health clinic worker. There may be other people ahead of you, and you may be stuck in a waiting room with other ill people. It will do no good to lose your patience, however, since the health clinic workers have to address each client as he or she enters, in order. If your problem is bad enough that you need emergency services, you should be at an emergency room. Since you are in a walk-in clinic, you need to be able to wait for walk-in clinic services.
